Nostalgic Memories
(2023)
For years, the Sawtooth building at Shelly Bay was part of my view across the harbour. Not a landmark I sought out — simply a permanent fixture of the horizon I lived with.
When its windows were boarded and a single rose appeared on the door, I photographed it. The gesture was quiet and anonymous — someone's private farewell made visible on a public building. Days later, it was gone. The fire was suspicious. The loss was not.
The Sawtooth had been contested for years: disputed ownership, public argument, an uncertain future. What no one anticipated was its sudden, violent erasure from the landscape entirely.
These photographs were not planned as an archive. They became one. They are what remains of a building that was already disappearing before the fire made that disappearance permanent.
